Your Role
Your Role Begins at Home:

As a homeowner, here are a few things that you can do to greatly improve the security of your Home:

  • When you leave your home – even for brief periods of time - be sure to securely lock your home’s doors and windows. Many of us feel so secure inside our YCC Community that we don’t always do this.
  • Locking your home must include closing and locking your garage door(s). A stroll around the neighborhood shows many open garage doors, even when people aren't home.
  • If you have valuable belongings, such as jewelry and important documents, consider buying a safe. Buy a heavy safe that can be securely bolted to the floor with a combination lock and not a key. Pick a combination code that you won’t forget. Do not share this code with anyone you don’t trust completely.
  • Be very careful when you trust anyone with a key to your home. If you have any kind of Home Help make sure that their use of your key is properly coordinated with our Security staff so that entries and exits to/from our community can be monitored and controlled.
  • Do not give or lend a Back Gate card to your Home Help. Instead insist that your Home Help always use the Main Gate entrance. Remember, a Home Help who has a house-key as well as a back-gate card has full access to your home when you are not home. The Home Help may know your weekly schedule and may know when you are not at home.
  • If you change your Home Help, you may want to change the locks on your home. You may also ask Security to invalidate your back-gate card, if it is no longer in your possession. Also, if you use home-keys inherited from the previous owner(s), you should change the locks.
  • If you will be away from your property for long periods of time, be sure to deposit a key with Security so that they can help in case of an emergency that requires access to your home. Security will keep your key safe and will maintain a log of any and all of its uses.
  • Don't forget to cancel all newspapers, since old newspapers in your driveway are a clear give-away that you are not home.
  • If you engage a service to check on your property while you are away, make sure that you trust the service 100%. Otherwise tell the service to obtain the key from Security every time they need to enter your Home.
  • You may want to install a security system and use it properly.
